Have you ever thought about being a charity trustee? Trustees are voluntary, non-executive board members, who govern the work of their charity. It’s a really rewarding experience, with plenty of opportunity for professional development, and the chance to make a real social impact.
Capability Jane is delighted to be joined by Janet Thorne, CEO of Reach Volunteering (www.reachvolunteering.org.uk). Reach have been connecting non-profits with skills-based volunteers for almost 40 years. They are the leading source of trustees for charities in the UK.
You may be interested in gaining some experience of governance, or extending your skills in areas such as strategic development . Perhaps there is a cause or social issue that you feel deeply about and want to help? Being a trustee is a great way of gaining valuable experience whilst making a difference, and it can fit alongside a full time job. Your employer may even have a supported volunteering scheme.
Almost anyone can be a trustee. Boards need a broad mixture of skills and experiences so they need someone who complements the existing team. You are the ideal candidate – you just need to find the board that is looking for you!
