According to Reed, the average salary for a full-time HR director stands at £91,408 a year; this amount has risen by £4,799 since 2017. HR managers and HR officers have seen similar boosts in fortune with salaries rising to an average of £47,047 and £30,508 respectively. So, what can affect an HR professional’s salary?
According to the annual HR Salary Survey by pay and benefits experts Croner Reward, location is a key factor. Their recent survey found that pay for people working in HR roles in much of the UK lags well behind London, by as much as 24%.

Our experience at Capability Jane shows HR Professionals within Financial Services are the best paid and the lower paid industries tend to be Not For Profit firms or Manufacturing. Croner also explains that the HR specialism is important and those HR professionals that specialise in recruitment are the lowest paid – 2.5% behind the overall average.
In addition, of the different sectors HR professionals work in, directors in the voluntary sector earn over £20,000 less than their private and public-sector counterparts.
The other major factor affecting salaries across the UK is gender. According to analysis of managers’ salaries conducted by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and XpertHR, male managers in HR on average earn £4,469 more than their female peers. While the average salary of a female manager stands at £40,177 this rises to £44,646 for men. Whilst this is disappointing, it’s interesting to note that this represents a pay gap of 10%, considerably lower than the average gender pay gap across all UK industries, which stands at 26.8%.
