Research has clearly shown that the ability to offer a part-time role is a critical factor for the retention of talented executives progressing into senior roles. However, today’s global corporations operating at a fast pace, across boundaries can often find it impossible to agree part-time working options that are workable and commercially viable for the business. Job sharing has proven to be a working option that enables the desired challenging, senior part-time roles while providing the round-the-clock cover and business continuity that is so vital in today’s global marketplace.

Capability Jane partnered with seven global organisations to launch a pioneering research programme, to investigate the use of job sharing in senior roles and identify best practice. Alongside Deloitte, RBS, KPMG, Centrica, DHL, Freshfields and Herbert Smith, plus three academic institutions: Cranfield School of Management, Lancaster University Management School and Leeds University Business School, our research evaluated the true role of job sharing in today’s marketplace.

The research focused on understanding how job sharing really works and on obtaining a sufficient understanding of success to develop practical content-rich, toolkits for prospective job sharers and employers wishing to increase the take-up of job sharing at senior levels.

The Job Share Project studied best practice examples of senior level job sharing with a particular emphasis on transactional, client facing and leadership roles within global organisations. We interviewed and analysed of over 100 senior job share partners, of which 71% were promoted while in the partnership confirming that our analysis was based on high performance.

This analysis gave valuable data points and insights on how to make job sharing work in a wide variety of roles and provided the Job Share Toolkit.
